Even though Johor Bahru is known as "Little Swatow" because its Chinese community is mainly Teochew, JB has more shops and stalls serving the Hokkien comfort food, mee hoon kueh than Singapore - which is mainly Hokkien.
Restoran Yi Bao Soon Li mee hoon kueh is popular among JB locals - 顺利面粉粿 is a name most locals know.
Restoran Yi Bao is right across the street from Plaza Pelangi along Jalan Maju which locals refer to as "newspaper street 報紙街" because of the number of newspaper offices here.
The view from inside the simple shop lot. That's Plaza Pelangi in the background.
The menu with all the dishes and options with prices all clearly displayed on the wall (dated 2015). Only old school mee hoon kueh, ban mien, mee kia and bee hoon here. Crispy fried anchovies is the most popular add on.
With a long day ahead, I indulged in a large bowl of mee hoon kueh for RM6.50.
Yi Bao's mee hoon kueh are uniformly thin squares. Personally, I prefer them hand torn so they come in irregular thickness and in odd shapes but roughly the same size.
The tenderly chewy mee hoon kueh tastes great with a pinch of the house made stinging hot chili sauce.
I like it that Yi Bao still uses sayur manis 马尼菜 which is the traditional greens for mee hoon kueh.
Tender balls of mince pork that tastes like wanton minus the wanton skin.
Tender fresh lean pork slices.
The broth has a comforting gently savoury sweet taste made by boiling pork bones and anchovies.
The egg was scrambled and quite stiff after I am done with photo taking. It didn't have a chance to blend into the broth (which would have enhanced it with egginess).
->> Traditional mee hoon kueh is a plain Jane, familiar comfort food which locals gravitate to. Restoran Yi Bao Soon LI is one of the established places for simple mee hoon kueh done well in JB.
