Soon Li Mee Hoon Kueh @ Restoran Yi Bao in Johor Bahru Taman Maju Jaya 顺利面粉粿

Yi Bao restaurant, just across Jalan Maju from Plaza Pelangi, offers traditional Hokkien mee hoon kueh. Their signature dish is very popular with office workers and residents in the area.

This bowl of mee hoon kueh costs RM4.50 (2012 price). Comes with minced pork balls, slices of lean pork, fried anchovies (ikan bilis), sayur manis, and a raw egg. It is a humble, simple dish.

It is eaten with fish sauce, ground white pepper, cut chili padi, and blended chili sauce.

The pork based soup is clear and has that distinctive anchovy flavour. As there is no excessive use of salt and MSG to artificially boost the soup’s taste, the delicious soup is highly drinkable. I finished the whole bowl of soup and yet did not feel thirsty afterwards.

The mee hoon kueh slices are thin and have a slight spring to the bite.

Add a dab of their blended chilli, each mouthful is a pleasure.

Their handmade minced pork balls are fresh and naturally sweet.

The raw egg dropped into the soup is perfectly soft cooked.

The price list is prominently displayed for all to see (dated 2012).

Many of my Hokkien friends love mee hoon kueh. I will bring them to Yi Bao (Soon Li Mee Hoon Kueh) to enjoy this home styled comfort food.

  3. having been there 4 yrs ago, we went last week and after the lunch crowd had disappeared. it was a disappointment : the pork was starchy and we felt it was made from frozen pork, the kueh was not springy and few for that price.the chilli was as good as before. well, we have had better one elsewhere. perhaps it will be another 4 yrs before we return to this shop.
