Mac Murphy Friendly Irish Bar @ Southkey Johor Bahru

Joined JB buddies at Mac Murphy Irish Bar, one of their regular, preferred hangouts as the owners are welcoming and the clientele is warm and friendly.

Hours: 4:00pm - 11:30pm

The pub is a very typically Irish bar set up, so it has the comfort of familiarity even when stepping in here for the first time.

Lots of cheerful banter and laughter of friends enjoying a relaxing night out after a day's work.

Owner Patrick, originally from Kluang, spent decades as a trader which took him to dozens of countries around the world. He is also a food and whiskey lover, hence he opened his own pub. Patrick didn't say it himself but obviously he loves meeting people and making friends, and of course, partying every night 😬 Hence, his own pub 😁

One of the highlights at Mac Murphy is Patrick's collection of whiskeys. There's more than one hundred to indulge in 😮

There's a range of dishes such as these Chilean mussels to go with the beers, stouts, whiskeys and other spirits.

The meaty mussels were sautéed in a savoury spicy sauce of butter, white wine, chili pepper, chopped garlic, etc.

Whole night, the air was punctuated with happy birthday singing 🥳 One night got so many people birthday together meh 🤔 Anyway, drink, eat cake and be happy lah 🎉

Then, there's this Mac Murphy Special which is spaghetti with a spicy sauce of olive oil, sambal, garlic, anchovies, bacon, chili flakes, etc. There's also an onsen egg with runny yolk.

The spaghetti was done al dente in the Italian sense, so it was tender firm, slightly chewy. The sauce enveloping the pasta was robustly savoury, salty, spicy which makes refreshing beers, etc more enjoyable 🤭 🍻

We had great conversations at Mac Murphy. We talked about many things, whatever that comes to mind. Somehow, we ended up talking about furniture and wood at one point, and Patrick showed us how very, very heavy his Chengal wood bar stools are. Chengal is an increasingly rare hardwood, so strong that it is still used for making traditional fishing boats e.g. in Pulau Pangkor Island.

It was a fun evening - good food, nice drinks, happy ambiance, new friends, great company at Mac Murphy Irish Bar.

Cheers to Patrick and chef J. See you again soon 🍻
