Kar Sou Hakka Yong Tau Foo @ Toa Payoh Vista Market 家嫂客家酿豆腐

Quite a few buddies pointed out this little yong tau foo stall to me. Thank you 🙏 It's a small operation run by a grandma. Over the years, grandma has built up her loyal following in this old corner of Toa Payoh where I grew up in the 1960s.

Stall name: Kar Sou Hakka Yong Tau Foo 家嫂客家酿豆腐

Address: Lor 4 Toa Payoh, Block 74, Singapore 310074

Nearest MRT: 15 minutes walk from Toa Payoh station

Hours: 6:00am - 1:00pm (Mon off)

Kar Sou Yong Tau Foo is located in Toa Payoh Vista Market which is the updated version of one of the oldest parts of Toa Payoh.

Grandma is usually a one woman show and she has to do everything herself. Yong tau foo being YTF, almost everything has to be handmade (she starts before daybreak), she has to cook, take orders, do cashier work, etc, so don't expect grandma to sayang (pamper) you 😬 Buy food eat only mah..., sayang what... .

Took this shot through the display shelves. They look yummy to me 😋

Grandma said don't take pictures, "I don't have enough". Not sure what she mean 😬 Anyway, took liao 🤭 So fresh hor? 😬

The menu is on the stall front and self explanatory with pictures. Kar Soh also has wanton mee and bak chor mee which seemed quite popular too, judging by what others were ordering.

Four pieces of yong tau foo, cannot choose, come with noodles half submerged in fiery looking curry. Good value at $4.50.

I like Kar Sou's yong tau foo pieces. They are good size, vegetables and tofu are fresh, the fillings are generously meaty.

It's minced pork blended with a bit of salted fish, the Hakka way. They tasted mildly savoury salty sweet with an overlay of slight spicy and sweet from the curry.

Just the necessary carbs, no need want more. Nicely done to the tender chewy texture I like.

The curry was heavy full bodied, almost creamy, mildly savoury spicy sweet. Grandma put a lot of curry leafs, so that characteristic herby taste and aromatic smell stood out. Not a full bowl, but enough and there is no wastage.

Ate at a few higher media profile yong tau foo places in both Singapore and Johor Bahru recently - Kar Sou compares favorably in my humble opinion. But, she has less variety and wait is a little longer even with no queue as grandma works alone. And, not going to sayang you. All no issue to me 🤠
