Unusual Japanese - Teochew Omakase in Johor Bahru • New Come & Eat @ Stulang 新吃又来

This was our first meet up since the JB - SG borders closed in Mar 2020 due to the pandemic. Glad to meet up again with buddies Peggy, Florence, KK and Shirley who are all, thankfully, doing well 🙏

New Come and Eat replaces the old Come and Eat which was my top favourite place for Teochew porridge in Johor Bahru since 2012. Quite sad that the old Come and Eat closed during the Covid pandemic as it serves excellent old school Teochew porridge 😢

Restaurant name: New Come & Eat 新吃又来

Address: 34-A-2, Jalan Stulang Darat, Taman Stulang Laut, 80300 Johor Bahru

Tel: +6011 2835 1005

Hours: 10:00am - 10:00pm (Mon off)

The New Come and Eat serves Teochew porridge as well as an omakase in an eclectic way in combination with Japanese dishes. It seemed quite a strange combination but owner Rena who is Foochow had ran both Teochew and Japanese eateries before, so she put her best dishes together omakase style. (Omakase is by appointment with Rena ☎️ +6011 2835 1005.)

New Come & Eat serves Teochew porridge in the al fresco main section outside and has a small air conditioned private room for omakase. Decor and furnishings are bare bones, spartan but comfortable enough.

First dish was oden with six soft items in savoury dashi soup. I don't really like spongy soft things in soup but this is omakase, so we were in the good hands of the chef, Rena supported by son Owen. The unexpected is part of the omakase fun and learning process 😊

Konjac or konnyaku which was tender crunchy like firm jelly and tasted sweet savoury.

I love the soft tender juicy mouth feel, savoury sweet taste of the Buta kakuni which were big pieces of stewed pork belly served with crunchy shirataki noodles and leafy greens in a savoury sauce.

So far, the Japnaese dishes were interesting though I was not sure how they were going to work with Teochew dishes.

The first non Japanese dish was stir fried sayur manis with egg and garlic. Not sure if this was Teochew but I am a mani chye, egg and garlic lover, so this one scored with me 😁

Then a fresh diamond trevally fish simply steamed without sauce or oil - the type of steamed fish dishes I associate with the old Come & Eat. Simply eat the sweet tender flesh with taucheo (fermented soy bean) and chili sauce, the Teochew way.

Raw blood cockles marinated in soy sauce. The omakase had turned decidedly Teochew, hardcore Chaoshan 😬

Next, asam fish with ikan terubok 刺壳鱼, another quintessentially Teochew seafood dish. It was nice, the flesh and bones all stewed till soft. The savoury sweet tangy flavours from soy sauce, salted vegetables and asam completely infused the fish. Good but a little different from the old Come and Eat's version which put more chili pepper in the stew for more pronounced spicy heat.

Next, saba misoni - fried mackerel fillet simmered in miso.

Beefy savoury spongy tender doteyaki or stewed beef tendons with miso under a blanket of aromatic chopped scallion. Love this.

Shiokara was fermented squid which tasted intensely sharp savoury salty in a deliciously appetising way.

Loved the shiokara so much that I was eating it with scoops of rice even though I was very full already.

Mango liquor made with three types of mangoes for their sweetness, sourness and fragrance. My glass was filled with only a sip 😬

We had a great time though it was quite an unusual combination of Teochew and Japanese. Not fine dining but a hyperlocal experience for those who are game for it. The eight course omakase for four cost RM600. If you are coming, call Rena at ☎️ +6011 2835 1005 for arrangements, preferences, and price.
