Fish Ball Noodles @ Restoran Lai Kee 来记西刀鱼丸 in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Johor Bahru

Lai Kee’s fish ball noodles 来记西刀鱼丸 is a household name in JB especially in TUTA (Taman Ungku Tun Aminah) where it has been in business since the 1980s. Lai Kee is always a bee hive of activity the moment it opens for business at 7:00am till closing time at 4:00pm. The shop is especially busy on weekends, so be prepared for longer waiting times.

For RM4.50 we get a bowl of noodles and a bowl of fish ball soup.

The noodles come with just enough sauce to coat it with only a thin film - but beware, it is loaded with robust flavours. The sauce is slightly spicy with a little bit of chili mixed into it. The most striking thing about the noodles is the full bodied fragrance of pork lard in the sauce.

The noodles and the soup are laced with these taste bomblets that explode a delightful flavour in your mouth when you bite into them.

The noodles and soup are excellent but the star of Lai Kee is, of course, their fresh hand made fish balls.

Lai Kee’s hand made fish balls are springy and flavourful. You can taste the sweetness and freshness of the Wolf Herring fish (Ikan Parang) with every bite. The fish balls are so fresh, they looked like they are alive and about to bounce away ;P  (Those who are old enough will remember those jumping beans that we used to play when we were small. The energy in these fish balls remind me of those ☻)

Lai Kee’s hand made fish balls are made right there at the shop using fresh Ikan Parang everyday, the way it has been for over 20 years. So it is not surprising that Lai Kee has a loyal following of fans who have been customers for the past 20 years.

Lai Kee’s regular customers like their fish balls so much that they buy them to cook at home.

I will definitely be back for Lai Kee’s fish balls

I went back to Lai Kee again and wrote a second post about my enjoyable visit and meal
