I was food spotting in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA) when I stumbled upon Restoran Sing Ting 新天 which was filled with customers. As I was curious, I went in to check and saw many people eating mee hoon kueh. Their happy faces tell me that I may have made another good food find.
I sat down and ordered a RM4.50 bowl of this mee hoon kueh. Besides the mee hoon kueh it has fish balls, a fried fish fritter, slices of lean pork, chye sim (green vegetables) and a sprinkling of fried anchovies.
The restaurant provided this comprehensive set of condiments to go with the mee hoon kueh. What interests me most were the special chili sauce and the black vinegar.
The soup made mainly of pork bones and anchovy is clear and tasted mildly, naturally sweet. This delicious soup is highly drinkable as it is not salty.
This mee hoon kueh is pinched and pulled by hand, so it comes in irregular shapes and sizes. As it is slightly thick, it felt firm, soft and chewy when I bite into it. This is the way I prefer mee hoon kueh - its texture and taste is better when it is hand stretched and torn 😄
This special chopped chili and garlic sauce is fragrant and not too hot.
The chili sauce is just spicy enough to give the mee hoon kueh a kick. Further add a dash of the sweet, sour and smooth vinegar, and the plain and simple mee hoon kueh turns into a tantalising treat for our taste buds.
This strip of fried minced fish meat is naturally sweet and has that delicate fresh fish flavour.
This chewy (factory made) fish ball tastes good.
The detailed price list for all to see (2012 prices).
Sing Ting is a good mee hoon kueh shop where I will bring friends who are fans of this traditional Hokkien comfort food.
