Kerala Restaurant is a well established name in Johor Bahru well loved for its fish, chicken and mutton curries. Each time I was there, I saw heart warming scenes of three generation families - grandparents, parents and children - enjoying their curries together.
Besides tasting good, Kerala's curries cater to different levels of preference for "hotness" of their curry. Their chicken curry is mild, but their mutton curry which I tried today is "hot".
This RM8.50 (2012 price) curry mutton meal comes with rice and curry cabbages, sweet potatoes, and lady's fingers. The curry vegetables which the owner buys fresh from the market everyday, vary from day to day i.e. on other days it could be long beans and potatoes, for example. As always, the ingredients of everything in Kerala is fresh.
As usual, there are these poppadoms which are crispy and flavourful. Today, the poppadoms are dry with little grease which is also the way I like them.
The curry mutton is on the bone. It is spicy and hot - certainly not for curry novices, and I love it 😄
The mutton is tender and juicy, and is infused with the herbs and spices from the rich curry. Coupled with the distinctive, natural flavour and taste of fresh mutton, it is simply lip smacking delicious.
I already have in mind some curry mutton fans whom I want to bring to Kerala Restaurant to enjoy this great curry together with me.
