Ais Kacang ABC @ Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) in Taman Serene Hawker Centre, Johor Bahru. Update 2018 彩虹陈记

Ais Kacang ABC @ Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) in Taman Serene Hawker Centre, Johor Bahru. Update 2018

Johor Bahru has an iconic chocolate ice kacang by Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) stall at Taman Serene hawker centre (also known as Medan Selera Jalan Biru).

陈如意 Ms Tan Joo Yee's father Tan Teck Chye created chocolate ice kacang over 40 years ago in 1976. Ms Tan helped at her parents' stall since she was a teen. Today, she runs Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) at Taman Serene hawker centre while her elder brother runs Tan Kee in downtown JB.

To this day, the signature chocolate sauce remains faithful to Ms Tan's late father's recipe. Either Ms Tan or her mum personally prepares the chocolate sauce at the stall everyday.

Ms Tan also insists on not taking short cuts on ingredients - everything is made and cooked from scratch, never resorting to precooked processed stuff from cans or vacuum packs.

Ms Tan was running a mobile stall at Taman Serene since 2001 until Johor Bahru city council (MBJB) built Taman Serene Hawker Centre in 2007.

Ms Tan's Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) stall has been here at Taman Serene hawker centre since. It has always been popular with students from the schools nearby.

Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) serves a full range of hot and cold desserts. Besides their famous chocolate ice kacang, I like their grilled you char kway and grilled tauhu (tauhu bakar).

Boiled red beans, corn, atap seeds buried in a small mountain of shaved ice which is heavily dressed with house made melted chocolate sauce. It's layers of sweetness with chocolaty flavour. Joo Yee's ice kacang is natural tasting and not cloyingly sweet. (No, this won't taste as sweet nor look as pretty as ice kacang with chemically coloured sugar water and chemical essence.)

From Ms Tan's parents' time, Tan Kee provides free flow of chocolate sauce with their ice kacang. Ms Tan still keeps to this generous tradition at her Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) stall.

Ais Kacang ABC @ Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi) 彩虹陈记 in Taman Serene Hawker Centre, Johor Bahru.

Tan Kee Ice Kacang (Ais Kacang in Malay) in Taman Serene, JB has been the favourite among students for decades. Tan Kee has moved around JB over the years and is now located in the popular Taman Serene hawker centre opposite the famous San Low seafood restaurant.

The signboard which says Joo Yee (Tan Kee Pelangi 彩虹陈记) is a little confusing so I asked the lady at the stall, who was peeling gingko nuts, about it. She happened to be the owner. She told me that Tan Kee is the name of the old stall and Joo Yee is the name of her daughter who runs the stall now.

Ais-Kacang

I imagine this Ais Kacang must have been etched in the minds of generations of former students as part of the fondest moments of their growing up years.

The mountain of crushed ice buries a generous amount of boiled red beans (hence it is called 红豆冰 in Chinese), corn, atap seed and topped with chocolate syrup. Tan Kee makes their own chocolate syrup from cocoa powder. (I heard that we are allowed unlimited chocolate toppings – this must be every student’s dream – but I didn’t try doing this.) The whole no frills concoction is not too sweet. Just an irresistible treat for the young and young at heart, especially on hot, humid days in sun drenched Malaysia.

Joo Yee also serves grilled you char kway and tau pok which are also very popular.

Grilled-You-Char-Kway

I liked their grilled you char kway because that nutty gravy they poured over the crispy yet chewy you char kway was just so... deliciously savoury sweet.

->> Unique JB style of ABC with chocolate syrup topping. This is one cool old school dessert place locals go to for a mid-morning or afternoon tête-à-tête.

  6. Tried the ice kacang today. I must say me and my friend were rather disappointed:( The ice kacang was not sweet enough, there was barely any of the syrups on it, only chocolate which tasted not too bad. There was not much of the corn, black beans etc underneath and to top it off they charged 7.50RM for one. Probably the most expensive ice kacang I have ever had and totally not worth it. You could probably get better ice kacang at any random drinks stall in food courts.

  7. This stall it's over rated. I prefer Happyland anytime.
