Enjoying fish soup in a well known but nameless street corner stall under the shade of a rambutan tree loaded with flaming red fruits has to be a uniquely Malaysia experience☻

The stall is at the junction of Jalan Tun Abdul Razak and Jalan Kebun Teh Lama, a stone’s throw north of Danga City Mall along Jalan Tun Abdul Razak.

The nameless stall does have a sun beaten banner that faintly announces what it is selling, which roughly translates as “sea bass kway teow soup”.

The coffee shop that it shares the premises with does have a prominent, traditional, craved sign board hanging over its main entrance.

My set of kway teow noodles and sea bass fish soup came to RM8.

The sauce was aromatic and the kway teow noodles were further enhanced with garnishing of fried shallots, chopped spring onions, and pork lard crackling.

The soup base was made with pork bones. Besides the slices of fresh sea bass fish, the soup had minced pork and bits of pork lard crackle. Looking at the crowd at the stall, there are many fans for this tasty, slightly salty and oily soup.

The star of the stall is of course its sea bass fish slices. The fish was very fresh, so we can taste it’s natural sweetness.

I loved especially the head bones. The bits of flesh, skin and soft cartilage were sweet and its texture delights the taste buds.

This was what we had on our second visit.

This set of mixed soup and dry kway teow noodles cost RM10, enough for two people.

Head bone with meat, my favourite pieces in the mixed bowl. I always enjoyed picking the tender flesh out of the head bones and sucking out the sweet juices in the bone crevices.

Fresh sweet slices of Baramundi meat.

 Tasty fish dumpling.

I don't really care for canned shellfish but this one came with the mixed soup we ordered. No bad actually, tender and flavourful.

Clear tasty soup, not overly oily but I would ask to skip the minced pork next time as I have to watch my cholesterol :P

Try the kopi at Seng Huat kopitiam. It's the "white coffee" style - light bodied yet robustly flavoured and aromatic. I liked it.

Another customer's Baramundi (sea bass) head soup. I am drooling again :P

I will be back regularly for a good fish soup and the uniquely Malaysia ambiance of dining under a rambutan tree.

->> Enjoy fresh fish soup breakfast under a large rambutan tree by the road side. This is a popular pit stop with JB locals at the city fringe.

  1. Hi bro JK, good recommendation from you again. I had that for lunch last Tues. I got 2 slices of mock abalone on top of all the goodies in that bowl of fish soup. Maybe 1st timer luck? The noodles in the bowl was quite little for a big eater like me..
